The Liposuction Procedure

Dr. Mandraccia offers two types of liposuction: tumescent and ultrasonic. For both types of liposuction, he uses a narrow instrument called a cannula to break up fatty tissue and suck it out of the body through small incisions. Learn more about each technique below:

• Tumescent liposuction: In this technique the area being sculpted is first injected with a saline solution containing a local anesthetic. The saline, which is larger than the amount of fatty tissue in volume, will cause the areas containing fatty tissue to rise up and become firm due to swelling. This allows Dr. Mandraccia to easily see the fat that needs to be removed.
• Ultrasonic: In this technique Dr. Mandraccia uses a specialized cannula that emits ultrasonic energy. As it moves through the areas of fat, the fat cells are liquefied and then removed. This technique is often used for liposuction in fibrous areas of the body, including the back.

For both techniques, a significant reduction in fatty tissue is seen immediately but the final appearance is usually realized in three to six months following treatment.

Recovery from Liposuction

For the first 72 hours after tumescent liposuction you will have a lot of fluid drainage from the incisions. Sometimes a small drainage tube will be inserted under the skin to prevent fluid buildup. After both types of liposuction Dr. Mandraccia has patients fitted with an elastic garment to wear for the first few weeks.  This helps keep the swelling down and allows your skin to adjust to its new contours.

To control pain and prevent infection, Dr. Mandraccia prescribes you both an antibiotic and pain medication to reduce post-operative discomfort. You should be able to walk around shortly after surgery and return to work and normal activities within a few days. Any stitches that Dr. Mandraccia has put in will be removed within 10 days, and the remaining swelling and bruising will subside within three weeks. Full recovery can take anywhere from four weeks to six months depending on the extent of liposuction performed.

Dr. Mandraccia uses the Lysonix Ultrasculpt(Trademark) during his liposuction procedures, one of the newest innovations to cosmetic surgery. It decreases swelling, pain and bruising, resulting in a faster recovery time. It also makes the removal of fat in difficult areas easier.

Dr. Mandraccia offers IV sedation for most cosmetic surgery procedures in the privacy of his own on-site operating room. Dr. Mandraccia’s facility has been certified by the Florida Board of Health as meeting it’s stringent requirements.
