The Chin Augmentation Procedure

Chin implant or augmentation surgery, as performed by Dr. Mandraccia, takes about 20 minutes to complete, and is generally done under local anesthesia with sedation. During the procedure, a tapered silicone chin implant is inserted by Dr. Mandraccia through a small incision just beneath the chin so that it lies directly on the bone. This implant comes in many shapes and sizes depending on the look you are trying to create. Computer imaging can be used to help you decide the exact size and shape. Once the implant is in place, Dr. Mandraccia uses small sutures are used to close the incision and you are left with a defined chin that looks and feels very natural.

Recovery from Chin Implant Surgery

Most patients feel very little pain after the surgery. Dr. Mandraccia will prescribe you pain medication during the initial healing period if necessary. Sutures are usually removed within five days and any swelling or discoloration should subside in one to two weeks. During the first two weeks you will need to refrain from strenuous activities, but most people can return to work or school with just a few days.

After the initial healing is complete you will need to spend the next six weeks avoiding activities that could cause you to bump or jar your chin. This is because the scar tissue surrounding your chin implant is what will hold it in place and it must remain undisturbed until you are fully healed.
