Cosmetic Nose Surgery ( Rhinoplasty )

Bonita Springs, Naples, Estero and Ft. Myers, Florida

Many people are not happy with the shape or contour of their noses. Some people may think their noses are cosmetically unattractive - that they do not "fit" with their other facial features. Also, many people have abnormal noses as a result of a birth defects, injury, or disease. Cosmetic nose surgery (also called rhinoplasty) is a popular procedure for our patients in the Ft. Myers, Florida area because it can create a more attractive nasal shape with better proportion.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Dr. Mandraccia performs rhinoplasty nose surgery on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. In a standard rhinoplasty, Dr. Mandraccia makes incisions inside the nostrils. Through those incisions, the nasal bones, cartilage, and soft tissues are reshaped to improve the external contour.

An “open” rhinoplasty is frequently used for difficult or larger noses. This method involves an external incision across the columella (the strut between the nostrils) used to reshape the bones, cartilage and soft tissues under direct vision. If only the nasal tip is abnormal, it may be corrected with either a standard or external (open) approach. Large nostrils may be reduced through tiny incisions at the outer base of the nostrils with either type of rhinoplasty.

Recovery from Rhinoplasty Nose Surgery

You’ll go home with an external cast or splint in place and initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication. Your nose may also be packed for 24 - 48 hours to help keep swelling down. The cast or splint is usually removed in 7 - 10 days, but it does take some time for the semifinal and final results to become evident - about 3 months for the semifinal result and 12 to 14 months for the final results, which is the time necessary for complete tissue softening.

An additional procedure that may enhance the result is a chin enlargement. If you need to improve breathing, correction of a deviated septum (Septoplasty) may also be appropriate. If the nasal correction is being done because of recent injury, the rhinoplasty may be covered with insurance.

Dr. Mandraccia conducts many cosmetic surgery procedures under IV sedation with certified nurse anesthesia in the privacy of his own office. Dr. Mandraccia’s office has been certified by the Florida Board of Health as meeting its stringent requirements. Patients can choose for general anesthesia in the surgery center located in our building that is jointly owned by Lee Memorial and Naples Community Hospitals.
